Welcome to Episode 63!

We are broadcasting from Georgia Veterinary Associates in beautiful, sunny Lawrenceville! We'll talk about how this beautiful weather isn't mixing with COVID as some community pools, golf clubs and other summer activities are still closed in our area. We'll also talk about how we all miss live sporting events and how tv stations here are playing reruns of classic games! This leads us to talk about pictures, family mementos, and gatherings.

We will talk briefly about the protesting and how without social media and our current technology, events and actions such as the tazing of some peacefully protesting college students would have never been seen by anyone other than who was there. Both the protests and COVID-19 are being effected and broadcasted outside of their immediate surroundings because of this, for better or for worse. We'll also talk about how social media is built on people's fears when it comes to almost everything. We will also mention the ad Nike put out in response to the death of George Floyd.

On a brighter note, the Georgia Aquarium welcomed a bay beluga over the weekend! The calf weighed 174lbs at birth!

We also briefly talk about how we plan to get GVA back to 'normal' in the next month or so. Starting with our Doctors, we hope to return to a 40-hour workweek for our full-time staff. What this looks like, we aren't so sure, but stay on top of our COVID-19 updates here, on our Facebook, and Google!

We will next talk about our Word of the Week! Ramus, which as we learn has a plethora of meanings and takes up at least 3 pages in Dr. Miller's veterinary medical dictionary. Ramus, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is "an arm or branch of a bone, in particular, those of the ischium and pubes or of the jawbone" but it can refer to almost any bone in the body. This word of the week was inspired by a recent case. A FurKid (a rescue group GVA works very closely with) was brought in after he was hit by a car and had severe head injuries. He is doing better and went back to his foster yesterday!

In the news! Our very own Emory Medical College in Atlanta has created a plexy glass shield to help front line workers stay safe in the fight against COVID-19. They plan on releasing the blueprints for free so other in need hospitals can build their own.

We at GVA have played with the idea of buying a mobile vet unit for patients and clients who would rather the vet office come to them! Over the weekend, however, one was stolen! Makes you think that while a brick and mortar store can be vandalized, at least it can't be driven away by a thief.

Do you remember the pug that was diagnosed with COVID-19 a few weeks ago? Well the AVMA has found that in reality, the pug didn't actually have COVID-19 and infect it was unbiased information.

Dr. Miller shares his thought on a viable vaccine for COVID-19, in that he doesn't think it will be very effective. Coronaviruses are common in the veterinary world, and more often than not, there is no vaccine. It's more about keeping the patient stable so they can fight the virus themselves.

Lastly, we'll talk about a woman who was mauled to death by her french bulldog.

We will also give a huge shoutout to Holly, Cody, Bill, Melanie, Merrly, Graham, and Sherry! Thank you for listening!
